Language education is all about learning how to truly communicate and connect with others and it is an incredibly important life skill in a globalized world. It plays a vital role in empowering the learners with effective communication skills necessarily required in various life situations as global citizens. It aims at developing learners’ intellectual, personal and professional abilities to encounter the challenges of and beyond the 21st century to cater to the process of sustainable national development of the country.
The study of languages is seen as an integral part of education as languages reflect the cultural richness of the society. Language learning contributes the mutual understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal fulfilment. It is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure.
Classical, Foreign Languages and Bilingual Education at the National Institute of Education shoulders the responsibility of developing Classical, Foreign Languages and Bilingual Education curriculum for the general education system in Sri Lanka and empowering the language teachers with required knowledge, skills and attitudes. It employs a wide range of teaching materials aiming at developing the four essential skills speaking, reading, writing and listening related to Classical, Foreign Languages and Bilingual Education. In addition to the basic functions, the unit conducts subject related educational researches to enhance quality of education. And also, the department has built a strong relationship with embassies, cultural centers and other languages relevant authorities with the aim of laying a strong foundation to Classical, Foreign language and Bilingual Education in Sri Lanka.
